300 Arrested after Iowa Meat Plant Immigration Raid

Federal agents arrested more than 300 workers from AgriProcessors kosher meat plant in Postville, Iowa, after an immigration raid. 40 of them were released for “humanitarian reasons.” The workers who were arrested were suspected of being in the United States illegally or of having participated in identity theft and the fraudulent use of Social Security numbers, the New York Times reported.

Those arrested will be interviewed by ICE agents and public health officers to find out if they have health, caregiver or humanitarian concerns, according to a release from the U.S. Justice Department. They will face criminal and civil charges, including identity theft, improper use of Social Security data and other crimes.

The raid of the Agriprocessors plant in northeastern Iowa was the largest in state history and had been planned for months, said U.S. Attorney Matt Dummermuth.

An affidavit filed in court before the raid by the Homeland Security Department cited “the issuance of 697 criminal complaints and arrest warrants against persons believed to be current employees” and to have acted criminally, the same source reported.

“This could have a big impact on the supply of kosher meat in America. Over the next several days, that’s going to be the big question for people in the Jewish community who keep kosher,” said Nathaniel Popper, a journalist who has written about AgriProcessors for The Jewish Daily Forward, in an interview, as USA Today reported.

The raid at the Agriprocessors Inc. plant came after months of planning. The plant is the country’s largest producer of meat and it had 1000 to 1200 workers, many of them being from Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, and other countries.

I am a formal meat inspector and a formal manager for a large hog corporation in the panhandle of Oklahoma. I am so glad that there was a raid, I only wonder why it takes so long to do a raid on a company. Like I said I lived in the Panhandle of Oklahoma where illigal immigration is very very common I think the ratio to legals is like 9:1 in Texas County. my family left b/c of the danger that the illigals have brought to the prodominately farm production area. While working in slaughter houses and hog farms I was amazed at how many illigals there was working. And how they were basically unashamed and would tell you constantly how easily it was for them to get someones SSN. and to see people get fired or not hired for a reason and returned in a few weeks with a totally different identity. Or how they used one SSN for work and another SSN for bills such as buying cars or having children. It discust me, I moved to the panhandle to attend college and I came to the area un pregidust, but after the experience my family and I had I can say this with pride THEY DESERVE NO RESPECT AND NO COMPASSION, if I went to Mexico and did not learn there language I would be thrown in jail, THEY WOULD NEVER HAVE ANY COMPASSION FOR ME!!! Illegas are nothing more than criminals. And they have proved that, just look at any promident illigal area and look at the crime rates and compaire them to 5 years ago and you will see a drastic change. Tell me what do they bring to the table?????
Why did it take so long?

I lived in Postville as a child in the late 80's and early 90's as all this new influx of people were coming into the town en mass. I can't believe it took this many years to have anyone check into this. I guess money talked for a while.
