FCC Wireless Spectrum Auction Bids $3.7bln
The bidding in the US Federal Communications Commission’s auction for wireless spectrum licenses in the 700MHz band went over 3.7 billion dollars on Friday, after only four rounds.

The bidding topped the 2.78 billion dollars on Thursday and the federal government hopes that it would raise 10 billion dollars until the end of the auction for the government- owned airwaves.

The 3.7 billion dollars are the highest bids that were received for five separate blocks of spectrum in the auction.

While the commercial C Block of the spectrum was bid up to 1.8 billion dollars in Friday's fourth round of the auction, the D Block was not shown too much interest, as it  stood close to its opening round offer of 472 million dollars, according to PC World’s world report on Saturday.

The difference in the two blocks is that the D is designed to serve the local public safety agencies, while the C block would be able to allow a full nationwide data service, which mean that the later one is much more profitable, therefore the huge bids.

The 700MHz spectrum will be made available by February 17, 2009 as the television stations, which now use an over- the- air signal, will move from the analog spectrum to the all- digital broadcasts.
