The popular car maker General
Motors announced it would reveal a new full-size hybrid pickup, as well as a
concept hybrid truck with the occasion of the Chicago Auto Show this week.
According to General Motors, the
2009 GMC Sierra model will get a 25 percent improvement in fuel economy, but
this won’t compromise its performance. On the other hand, the company’s GMC
Denali XT concept hybrid truck will get no less than 50 percent better fuel
economy than a similar small pickup.
The 2009 GMC Sierra is the next
large vehicle to which General Motors will add its brand new two-mode hybrid
system. This system has been already introduced on the GMC Yukon sport utility
and on the Chevrolet Tahoe vehicle, as well as on the Chevrolet Silverado
pickup. While the SUVs are scheduled to go on sale early in 2008, the Chevrolet
Silverado and the 2009 GMC Sierra are set to hit the market at the end of the
year.
General Motors’ two-mode hybrid
system became very popular last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show, when the
Green Car Journal named the company’s Chevrolet Tahoe the 2008 Green Car of the
Year.
Thanks to its efficiency, the two-mode
hybrid system is far more popular than the single-mode hybrid system, which is
currently used by companies such as Toyota Motor or Ford Motor.
