Serbia’s pro-Western president Boris Tadic is celebrating victory in the country’s parliamentary elections. According to the assessments, Tadic’s alliance attained 39% of the vote, about 10% more than the nationalist Radicals.

“Tadic’s coalition has convincingly won these elections,” said Zoran Lucic from the Center for Free Elections and Democracy, as telegraph.co.uk cites.

This result is deemed to be an outset for Serbia’s way towards E.U., which welcomed this victory of the pro-European forces in Serbian parliamentary elections.

“The citizens of Serbia have undoubtedly confirmed a clear European path,” said President Boris Tadic, who is on his second four-year term.

In case of the Nationalists’ victory, who wish to cease negotiations with E.U., Serbia would be exposed to an international isolation risk.

However, building a coalition will be difficult. The 250 seat parliament will be divided between five parties, since this is the number of political entities that have succeeded to obtain 5% of the total votes.

The balance of power is foreshadowed to be brought by the Socialists, because according to the actual results, there are two reformist and two Nationalist parties for now. This is somehow worrisome, because the Socialists were founded and led by Slobodan Milosevic.

Fortunately, the actual declarations made by Socialist leaders are reassuring. They intend to support Serbia’s integration in the E.U., but only under the condition of re-discussing the Kosovo matter. They urge the E.U. to accept the unity of the country and stop considering Kosovo as having its own identity.

With the European Union, we should not negotiate about anything anymore, without it first clearly saying that Serbia is recognized as a whole," said Tomislav Nikolic in Belgrade yesterday, according to telegraph.co.uk
