British Government Releases UFO Files

It appears the British government recorded reports of unidentified flying objects (UFO) hovering over Liverpool and over Waterloo Bridge in London, BBC News reports. There are among hundreds of sightings of UFOs across the UK released in eight MoD files to the National Archive, and they cover a period from 1978 to 1987.

The information can be downloaded from the website of the National Archives for free for the first month and there will be nearly 200 files released in total over the next four years (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ufos), Reuters reports.

Nick Pope, who worked for the MoD for 21 years and was responsible for investigating the sightings declared: “While there’s no evidence of little green men in these files, they should be of immense interest to skeptics and believers.”

“Most of the UFO sightings here are probably misidentifications of aircraft lights and meteors, but some are more difficult to explain, and include UFOs seen by police officers and pilots, and cases where UFOs have been tracked on radar,” he added.

According to experts, the majority of the UFO reports come from members of the public who see strange things in the sky and believe that a UFO is involved even though there are logical explanations for what they see.

Visitors to the National Archive website will be able to listen to a podcast from Dr. David Clarke from Hallam University in which he will discuss the files and their release. The MoD decided to release the files due to the requests it has received from UFO buffs and conspiracy theorists under the Freedom of Information Act.
