Disney Launches DGamer

On Thursday, Disney Interactive Studios launched DGamer, a service especially made for Nintendo DS users, enabling them to create online profiles, store gaming accomplishments and get in touch with other users.

The software will be made available for free and will be offered together with Disney DS games. The first one to feature the new Dgamer will be "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian."

Graham Hopper, executive vice president and general manager for Disney Interactive Studios, said that this is the first "integrated online community of its kind" and the main target of the project is to offer customers a safe and fun environment. Parents are given the possibility to access the website and select the online interactivity level they feel comfortable with for their kids.

As far as chatting goes, there are three different safety options: Speed Chat, where only predetermined words or phrases can be used; Speed Chat Plus, where the language is free but all the bad words are blocked; and then there’s Open Chat, where everything goes, under the condition that users exchange a "True Friend Code." Further information can be found by accessing www.dgamer.com.

The game has been doing quite well: as found in NPD Group Inc.’s videogame sales data for 2007, Disney has recorded no less than 3.4 million Nintendo DS units.
