PS3 Is the “Console of Choice” for Teenagers

Following the results of a recent Habbo survey involving young people with ages between 11 and 18, it seems that, as far as video games are concerned, teenagers prefer the PlayStation 3.

58,368 teenagers participated in the survey and 69 percent of them considered the PS3 to be either “great” or “good.” However, the difference between the PS3 and its competitors, Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, was not that significant. The Wii was ranked at 64 percent and the Xbox 360 at 58 percent.

Nowadays, when talking game consoles, these are the three major names that immediatly come to mind. Sony has dominated the global game industry over the past years, thanks to its gaming platforms PlayStation and PlayStation 2. But, when analyzing sales, after launching PlayStation 3, things seem to have taken a wrong direction for Sony. PS3 has been mainly characterized by its high price and lack of attractive software titles.

Last year, while it was very popular in the United States, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has started to experience slow sales on the Japanese market. Then, in June 2007, Nintendo’s Wii game console has outsold Sony’s PlayStation 3 by a ratio of over 6 to 1, and Xbox by a ratio of about 2 to 1 on the Japanese market. Among the three, Xbox had the advantage of being released ahead of the others, but its hardware failures made its rivals win the battle.

According to the results of this survey, PS3’s situation presents a high potential for positive change.
