It might not be a big surprise, but the drugs Amy Winehouse
just can’t get enough of are now officially endangering her life.
In an interview with the Sunday Mirror, the soul singer’s
father, Mitch Winehouse, expressed his worries concerning his daughter’s
health, after doctors said she had early stage emphysema and an irregular
heartbeat.
The doctors warned Amy she might become an invalid if she
doesn’t stop smoking drugs. They told her an oxygen mask alternative awaited
her if she didn’t immediately change her lifestyle.
"The doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking
drugs, it won't just ruin her voice, it will kill her," Mitch Winehouse
told the Mirror. "There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She
has 70 percent lung capacity."
Mr. Winehouse said that, even though the emphysema was in
its early stages, the doctors managed to alarm Amy, painting a very dark future
for her. Hopefully, it worked this time…The diva in distress apparently told
her father she now was aware she had to stop taking drugs. But who knows how
many times she has said that before?
The 24-year old singer was hospitalized on June 16, after
she had fainted in her home in London. Since then, she has gone through tests
and analyses. Fortunately for her, tests so far have ruled out tuberculosis,
but her health situation is still far from being good.
Her father said Amy had been awake for 48 hours before being
hospitalized, but then she slept for three days in a row.
Despite the bad medical news, Winehouse is scheduled to
perform in London on Friday, on the occasion of Nelson Mandela’s 90th
birthday celebration. She also plans to participate in the Glastonbury music
festival the following day.
Mitch Winehouse said he was glad his daughter was going to
perform, as he thought that "when she's been inactive work-wise then
that's when the problems really start.” The doctors said there was no medical
reason that could stop Amy from singing at the moment, and they even recommended
her to be professionally active.
In the meantime, Mr. Winehouse, pleaded with Amy’s drug-addicted
friends to stay away from the singer and give her a chance to recover.
