Autopsy To Establish If Heparin Overdose Lead to Texas Newborn’s Death
A newborn baby has passed away at a Corpus Christi Hospital, Texas, after being applied an overdose of the blood thinner heparin, informed on Wednesday the local Caller-Times newspaper. Other 16 infants received an overdose. Allegedly, nurses used 10,000 units of the drug instead of 10.

It is unknown if heparin had a contribution in the baby’s death, informed CNN, which got the news from hospital officials. According to Sherri Carr-Deer, spokesman for Christus Spohn Hospital, the infant died Tuesday morning. The drug was administered as a routine to flush IV tubes, to avoid blood clots from developing. The fatal error was spotted Sunday night, during the regular blood work. The medicine’s use was ceased without delay and the infant’s in need of medications to counter its effects were given the remedy.

Among the affected babies, one remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit, being in the same condition for several days before the heparin overdose, three have been released from hospital and 12 are stable and remain in the unit.

The error occurred during a process for the IVs when pharmacy personnel mixed it with other solutions, including saline. Two workers have voluntarily left their positions, expecting the results of the investigation. It hasn’t been identified the contribution of heparin overdose, if any, in the infant’s death because he was already seriously ill and under care in the unit before dying, said Dr. Richard Davis, the hospital’s president medical officer. An autopsy will be performed in order to ascertain whether the drug has been a factor in the deadly case.
