25 Works Added to National Recording Registry

Librarian of Congress James Billington announced the 25 additions to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress as part of its efforts to preserve the nation's aural history by archiving recordings deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant,” Reuters reported.

The titles range from Michael Jackson’s best-seller “Thriller” and T-Bone Walker’s “Call It Stormy Monday but Tuesday Is Just as Bad” to the original cast recording of “My Fair Lady,” Harry S. Truman speech at the 1984 Democratic National Convention, and works by Joseph Falcon, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock or Ronald Reagan Radio Broadcasts.

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is one of the bestselling albums of all time, with 45 million worldwide sales powered by seven Top US singles and eight Grammy Awards.

“Audio preservation constitutes a critical challenge,” James Billington said. “Much has already been lost, particularly in the field of radio.”

This year’s list also includes: the first trans-Atlantic broadcast: Joseph Falcon’s “Allons a Lafayette,” “Casta Diva,” from Bellini's “Norma”; Rosa Ponselle, accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Giulio Setti, Thomas A. Dorsey’s “If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again,” Fiorello LaGuardia reading the comics, Harry S. Truman Speech at the 1948 Democratic National Convention, Kitty Wells’ “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels,” Navajo Shootingway Ceremony Field Recordings, recorded by David McAllester, Elizabeth Cotten’s “Freight Train,’ and Other North Carolina Folk Songs and Tunes,” Marine Band Concert Album to Help Benefit the National Cultural Center.
