Melinda’s elimination from “American Idol” came as a great surprise to many. Praised by even the most skeptical judge of all, Simon Cowell himself, the 29-year-old back-up singer nevertheless did not make it.
The very young Jordin Sparks, 17, and 25-year-old Blake Lewis are the two remaining finalists. Wednesday night was Melinda’s last time on the “American Idol” stage.
Cowell, usually ruthless when displeased with contestants’ performances, clearly showed his appreciation for Melinda’s singing abilities throughout the weeks. Last night, when the results were announced, the acid judge bid Melinda farewell.
“Congratulations to you two. My commiserations, Melinda, 'cause you are one heck of a singer,” Cowell said, who showed his dissatisfaction with her departure by covering his face with his hands when he heard the news.
Melinda did not play the sore loser and left the stage with grace.
The remaining contestants are the charismatic and likeable Jordin Sparks, from Glendale, Ariz. Her recent weeks on “American Idol” have garnered her wide appreciation from the public and scores of fans rooting for her to become the next American idol.
Blake Lewis, who comes from Bothell, Wash., has received appreciation even from Cowell, who is not a man to spare good words, for his courage to experiment. Beatboxer Blake has not played it safe, to his credit, turning each cover he’s undertaken into a markedly personal rendition.
Wednesday's show also featured performances by Maroon 5 and former contestant Elliott Yamin, who came in third last year.
Both Jordin and Blake auditioned in Seattle.
