Martial arts film “The Forbidden Kingdom” starring Jet Li and Jackie Chan opened No. 1 at the Friday box office, ahead of Universal's romantic comedy “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” According to Steve Rothenberg, Lionsgate's president of distribution, fully 68 percent of Forbidden Kingdom ticketbuyers were men, E! online reports.
“Forbidden Kingdom” (PG-13 rated) earned an estimated $20.9 million Sunday from nearly 3,151 theaters. This is the first time when the duo Li-Chan appeared together on the bigscreen. The movie was produced by Casey Silver and financed by Relativity Media and TWC's Asian Film Fund.
“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” (R-Rated), produced by Judd Apatow, placed second with an estimated $17.3 million at 2,798. However, the film’s opening day (Friday, $6,08 million) was lower than his string of R-rated romantic comedies hits “Superbad” ($12.3 million), “Knocked Up” ($9.8 million) and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” ($7.1 million).
Sony's teen-horror “Prom Night,” which is last weekend’s No. 1 opener, gained the third place with $9.1 million off 2,700, while Sony-TriStar's Al Pacino crime-thriller “88 Minutes” counted $6.8 million in fourth from 2,168. Nim's Island earned $5.7 million and blackjack drama “21” ranked sixth, grossing $5.5 million from 2,903.
