Now that the California Supreme Court has lifted its ban on
same-sex marriage, many gay couples will be able to spiritually bond with the
beloved ones. Among them, 71-year-old actor George Takei will get to marry the
man of his life, 54-year-old Brad Altman, with whom he has been sharing his life
for the past 21 years. E! Online reports that Altman was the one to pop the
question. The proposal came on Thursday, shortly after the California Supreme
Court announced the legalization of the same-sex marriages.
The “Star Treck” star and his future husband are now
planning the big day. Besides being his love partner, Altman is also Takei’s business
manager. According to the actor, he and his lover have shared a lot of things together,
from good moments to difficult ones. Takei wrote on his Web site that they
would have gotten married a long time ago if the law had permitted them to do
so.
The announcement of the couple’s marriage appeared in a blog
post on Friday, precisely the same day Ellen DeGeneres spoke about her wedding
plans with actress Portia de Rossi in her talk show. E! Online reports that
Takei and his boyfriend have not decided the date so far, but the wedding will
take place sometime after mid-June and before November. Takei said that "We
are now going through the process of making those wonderful decisions,"
referring to their wedding plans.
BBC News reports that opponents of the Supreme Court’s decision said that they
were willing to seek for an amendment to the state constitution, in order to
override the ruling.
