Alcine Wins WBA with Unanimous Decision
Joachim Alcine (29-0) seized the WBA super welterweight beating Travis Simms with a unanimous decision in a foul-filled fight Saturday night.

This was Simms (25-1) first title defense and Alcine’s first title bout.
Judge Tom Kaczmarek scored it 114-111, Glen Feldman 115-110, and George DeGabriel 116-109 for the title contender.

"I definitely thought I won the fight," Alcine said. "For all the talking Simms was doing before the fight, I thought he would be more aggressive. He was not a bad boxer, but I thought he was a bigger puncher.

"I felt I was behind in the early rounds so I picked it up. I now know I'm good enough to fight anyone in the division."

Controversy spurred as in the eleventh round the 36-year-old Simms apparently slipped and fell on the floor in an attempt to punch his opponent. Referee Michael Ortega ruled it as a knockdown, the first in Simms’ career.

"That wasn't a knockdown," the former champion insisted. "The ring was covered with sweat and water. You need to use good judgment."

The afterwards-argued knockdown did it for Alcine, who became more aggressive and dominated the fight till the end as his opponent did more holding than hitting, complaining of an early injury at his left hand that made him unable to fight at a desired potential.

"I don't want to make any excuses," Simms said. "I was unable to connect with any hard punches. He won fair and square, and naturally, I want a rematch. I still feel like I'm the champion, but this was his night."

In the other big fight of the night, Donaire knocked out 7-1 favorite Darchinyan with a left hook at 1:38 of the fifth round to become the IBF/IBO flyweight new champion.
