The rumors have showed up to have
been true: Apple has announced yesterday a new model of iPod! But the company
has not stopped there, and has announced also another thing that really takes
us by surprise: Apple will as well drop the price for its ultimate gadget, the
iPhone!
Steve Jobs’ company has made this
surprising announcement just hours after the market research company iSuppli
has claimed Apple’s iPhone as the best selling smart phone of July (its first
month of release). The 8 GB iPhone’s price will drop by no less than $200, to
$399, in a move that hasn’t even been argued by Apple. So, the ultimate gadget’s
enthusiastic fans are probably very happy; but for the investors have
interpreted negatively the fact that Apple has announced this price cut when
the smart phone is reportedly selling very well and hasn’t even given a reason
for the move. The company’s stock has closed off more than 5%, at $136.76. The
investors seem to fear Apple might be hiding something, as the company has
never been interested in giving such “gifts” to its customers.
So, although the company’s
executives have insisted that this price cut move had been planned long ago,
the new announcement could rather mean that the iPhone is not in fact immune
from the brutal pressures of the mobile phone business. Still, there are also
other possible reasons for the company’s surprising move.
