Apple’s ultimate marketing
strategy appears to be simply cutting the prices. After the surprising move
from the 5th of September when the popular company has announced an
unexpected price drop of $200 for its ultimate gadget, the iPhone, Apple is
being rumored of planning to drop also the prices of the TV episodes it sells
through iTunes from $1.99 to $0.99. Although till now this is just a Variety
report, the move is very likely to happen.
But, what would this move’s
significance be? As Variety’s reporters say, this potential future price drop
will not go very well in Hollywood.
The reporters have even claimed that the recent separation between Apple and
NBC Universal may have had the roots in fact in Apple’s intent of dropping the
prices on the TV episodes it sells through iTunes. While Apple’s has said at
the moment that is has been in fact NBC Universal that has asked for a $5 price
per episode, the media company has denied this fact and ended its collaboration
with Apple, claiming its not being flexible enough.
And, indeed, Apple seems to be
rather stubborn, than flexible. But its new marketing game could be also risky,
taking into account that now all the networks will become really affected by
its move. However, on the other hand it
is the customer that buys, and not the networks, and maybe Apple will win after
all.
