“Splice” is a new science fiction
thriller that will begin shooting the next month in Toronto. Starring Sarah Polley and Andrien
Brody, the movie will tell the story of two young scientists that will become
famous for having spliced different animal DNA codes and having started to
create fantastical new creatures. But, they will eventually ignore any legal or
ethical boundary and will introduce also human DNA into the experiment.
But, what’s with this story here?
Are we at the Entertainment section or what? The answer is simple. Amazingly,
and probably unfortunately, “Splice” is rather an anticipative movie, than a
sci-fi one. A scientist has recently announced that he has built a synthetic
new form of life from laboratory chemicals. Despite the fact that the movie’s script
has been written before this news has been released, the coincidence is quite
amazing. It is obvious that in the movie everything happens with the speed of
light, comparing to reality, but the most difficult step seems to have been
made. Although it is just a form of bacteria, and although it has been created
out of laboratory chemicals and not out of mixed DNA codes, a synthetic new form
of life has been created!
Man could already compare to God,
although till now it is in fact only about a “God of small things”, as
Arundhati Roy has titled her novel. Let’s all hope that this step won’t be in
fact the beginning of man’s downfall.
Let’s hope that this new amazing
scientific move will lead to new energy sources and new methods of combating the
global warming, as the scientists say, and not to destructive ideas. Let’s
exercise our humanity by hoping and wishing for the best.
