Asian Art Expert Found Dead In Detention Center

Roxanna Brown, a 62-year-old American director of a museum in Thailand was found dead Wednesday night in a detention center in Seattle. The cause of her death has not been yet established. The Seattle Times indicated that she might have suffered a heart attack. But has she received all the medical care that she needed?

Maggie Ogden, an attorney and spokeswoman for the Federal Detention Center, said that the detention center did not have any medical staff on duty overnight. And it was not unknown the fact that Brown had the symptoms of an infection even before she got into custody.

The art expert, trained in art history at UCLA, traveled to USA in order to participate at an Asian-art symposium organized by the University of Washington.

She was arrested last week and charged with a single count of wire fraud. Federal investigations revealed that she helped art collectors to claim fraudulent tax deductions. Thus, she is believed to have allowed her electronic signature be placed on fake appraisal forms that increased the value of some art pieces, which were sent to the Californian museums. If she were to be found guilty, the penalty would have been 20 years of prison.
