Cubans are no longer allowed to
access the country’s most-read blog, Generacion Y. Cuban authorities seem to
have taken this decision because of the fact that Yoani Sanchez’ blog’s tone
was highly critical. On the other hand, Generation Y was very popular among
young Cuban Internet users and not only. In February, for example, it
reportedly received no less than 1.2 million hits, according to its users.
Yoani Sanchez, the main author of
this blog, as well as two other home-grown bloggers seem to have really angered
the Cuban authorities. "So the anonymous censors of our famished
cyberspace have tried to shut me in a room, turn off the light and not let my
friends in," Yoani Sanchez wrote on her blog on Monday. Sanchez said that
users from Cuba were not
allowed anymore to access the web site, which is hosted by a server in Germany.
But, despite Communist
authorities’ censorship, Sanchez found a way to beat her “enemies’” system and
to access her web site through an indirect route. However, common Cuban users
are not longer able to read the popular blog.
The courageous Cuban blogger is
32 years old and a philology graduate. She seems to have angered the Cuban
authorities because she used to write on her blog about her daily life in Cuba,
describing economic and political problems happening in her country. Sanchez
has also criticized the country’s new leader, Raul Castro, Fidel Castro’s
brother, who took over last month.
