Even if China’s recent actions have raised critics and chaotic protests everywhere the Olympic flame went, the latest announcement by the Beijing officials is a good news for everyone, as they decided to implement a plan aimed to improve the air’s quality for the Games by shutting down factories and construction sites.
The plan, which can only be welcomed, will start being implemented on July 20 and will last around two months, in which not even cars will be allowed.
The Beijing environmental protection bureau announced that it wants to offer good air quality during the Olympic Games that will begin on August 8.
The plan will severely affect at least 19 heavily polluting plants in Beijing, while construction sites will have to halt operations. However, some construction sites that do not pollute too much would be allowed to continue.
Under the plan, Beijing’s officials hope to lower the number of cars on the road by nearly a half of the city’s three million cars.
However, there is the possibility that the weather conditions to make the plan fail, if a weather pattern, called inversion, would not allow polluted air to circulate and refresh, but Beijing authorities are prepared for that too.
If the weather would not support the plan, even more plants would be shut down and all measures would be tightened.
Since Beijing is one of the most polluted cities in the world, the International Olympic Committee has expressed concern for athletes that will be there this summer. Those competing outdoors would have to face some risks when putting effort more than one hour.
