Rick Carlisle announced on Tuesday that he will not return as Indiana Pacers’ executive vice president. He was fired in April after four years as Pacers' coach "I met with both Larry Bird and Donnie Walsh last Friday and expressed my sincere appreciation for the opportunity to come back next year in a front office capacity, but felt it was better for both the Pacers and myself to part ways at this time. The Pacers organization has been a major part of the lives of my self and my family for seven of the last 10 years, and those years have been precious both personally and professionally," said Carlisle. Working in television, a coaching job or time off are Carlisle’s future choices as he has told The Associated Press. He has worked with ESPN and ABC during the playoffs and said he will continue through the rest of the NBA finals. Carlisle coached the Pacers through four seasons with a 181-147 record and they made it to the playoffs on three occasions. The first season with Carlisle in charge was also the most successful. In 2003-2004 they had the best record in franchise history (61-21) and made it to the Eastern Conference finals. This season was the Pacers’ worst in the last seventeen years as they finished with a 35-47 record and missed the playoffs for the first time in the last decade. Jim O'Brien The Pacers replaced Carlisle with Jim O'Brien who officially agreed to coach the team in May 31.
