As the Internet has become accessible pretty much anywhere
nowadays and surfing the web inside a coffee shop for instance, is now part of
everyday life, Chrysler is getting ready to take things to the next level.
As if listening to music, watching DVDs and talking on the
phone wasn’t distracting enough, the company is planning to implement a wireless
Internet service in its 2009 vehicle series. The UConnect Web service implies
the use of cellular technology in order to enable passengers to get online
regardless their driving route. Users may also be given access to several satellite
television and radio stations.
Although pricing-related details haven’t been disclosed yet,
it is very likely that the service will be made available through a monthly
subscription fee.
The system will feature a 30GB in-car hard drive, capable of
supporting a wide range of music formats, movies and images, and may also power
a navigation system. A preview of what’s ahead will be showed off on a selected
number of 2008 Chrysler vehicles.
Obviously enough, not everybody is equally excited about
Chrysler’s plans. Jonathan Adkins, spokesman for the California Governors
Highway Safety Assistant, feels that the Internet is definitely something
people should not have access to while driving, as it is nothing but "a
distraction."
Starting July 1, according to new California laws, drivers won’t be able to
use mobile phones without hands-free kits.
