Climbers on K2 Reported Dead and Missing
K2, the world’s second highest mountain in northern Pakistan, near the border with China, is also known as being more dangerous than Mount Everest. On Sunday, at least nine climbers were reported dead after an avalanche came toward them at a height of about 27,000 feet, below the summit.

Among the dead, there were five members of a team of South Korean climbers and two Nepalese climbers. Also Serbian, Norwegian, Dutch and French climbers were near that place and they are believed to be missing. On Monday morning, the Pakistani military set down a rescue operation in the mountains.

Two Dutch climbers were rescued today and they have major injuries, being very scared, as Maj. Farooq Feroz Khan, spokesman of Pakistani Military’s Force Northern Area Command, said. Two army helicopters were used in the rescue operation.

It seems that a chunk of ice pillar fell and broke the ropes of the climbers on Friday. The climbers were on a peak just below the summit, known as Bottleneck, the most dangerous peak in the world.

The region of Bottleneck is known as a Dead Zone because the lack of oxygen at such a high altitude freezes the bodies of the climbers. Nearly a dozen climbers were caught at Bottleneck as several rescue operations were trying to save them because they couldn’t get back down having their ropes broken.

On August 13, 1995, six people fell from K2 during a storm, but the peak was conquered by two Italians in July 1945.
