On Monday, Alvarion Ltd., the largest WiMax and wireless broadband solutions provider in the world, announced the official commercial release of the Mobile WiMax Internet service by DigitalBridge Communications (DBC).

The network is already operational in the Jackson Hole, Wyoming area. As the region is highly attractive to tourists all year long, giving them the possibility to access such a high-speed connection was a must. DBC's network provides businesses and public offices with wireless connectivity via in-vehicle devices as well, thus enabling employees to access video, voice and other content wherever they are. Users have the possibility to transmit video footage, captured with a webcam while driving, to another location; this feature comes in very handy to police officers for instance.

For getting started, a subscription fee of less than $40 a month for one year is needed. In order to better accommodate visitors, the company is planning to introduce short-term (daily or weekly) subscriptions.

Jackson Hole will soon be joined by other markets; so far, the full mobile-certified WiMax service was brought by DBC to Idaho, Indiana, Montana, South Dakota, Virginia and Wyoming.

There is a high chance for Sprint to become the next operator to start working with mobile WiMax, as a Baltimore launch is set for September. With the new technology, the network will be capable of delivering its users speeds up to five times faster than the present wireless networks.
