Joseph Edward Duncan III was given the death sentence on Wednesday. He had kidnapped and murdered a boy of only 9 years old from Idaho back in 2005. The federal jurors reached the death verdict after they had watched a video of the violent murder. The video was recorded while Duncan was torturing the little boy for more than three hours.
Dylan Groene’s relatives were full of grief as the jury announced their decision to sentence Duncan to death. The murderer had killed Dylan’s mother, his older brother and his mother’s boyfriend to kidnap the 9-year-old. His younger sister was sexually abused together with her little brother, but she survived.
Duncan entered their house in the area Coeur d’Alene and he killed Slade Groene, 13, with a hammer. With the same object, he killed Dylan’s mother, Brenda Groene and her fiancé, Mark McKenzie.
Duncan took Dylan and Shasta, his 8-year-old sister, to a campsite in Montana in 2005. There, he raped and tortured them before shooting Dylan in the head and burnt his body. Before he had shot the boy, Duncan hanged him until he lost consciousness.
Shasta was rescued weeks after Duncan had kidnapped her, because a waitress who worked as a Denny’s in Coeur d’Alene recognized them while there were taking lunch.
"I have no argument," the murderer told the court. He smiled when the verdict passed from the jury to the judge and he acted as he was his own lawyer, but he offered no reasonable arguments of what he had done.
