Eagerly Expected New Features For the iPhone
In anticipation of Apple's 3.0 iPhone software announcement tomorrow, Kevin Rose, founder of Digg.com, revealed some details on the new features expected in the next iteration of iPhone's operating system.

Among Rose's mentionable tidbits is that copy and paste should finally arrive, and he even offered a believable explanation, a clip of which is embedded below, of how the feature will work.

Rose also cites his source as saying that there will be no background applications for the iPhone, no video and no multimedia messages (MMS) this release. But hopefully Apple will announce its long-promised iPhone push-notification system. The company may even go so far as to loosen up the restrictions on applications running in the background, which would greatly benefit programs like music players, macro utilities, GPS data loggers, and instant-messaging clients. Again, it may be a case of history repeating itself: remember, the original Mac OS ran just one program for the first several years of its existence too.

The iPhone 3.0 software will also include other unspecified features aimed to bringing the iPhone up to speed with Palm's Pre smartphone. "Everything that the Palm Pre thought they had on Apple has now gone away," Rose said in the podcast.

Rose also made an interesting observation, saying that (according to his sources) the new iPhone OS will match Palm's upcoming Pre phone features. Rose did not explain further what he meant by matching Palm Pre's features, but previous rumors suggest that tethering (iPhone as a modem) will be on the list.
