FBI, IRS Search Sen. Stevens' Alaska Home
Federal Bureau of Investigation and Internal Revenue Service agents have conducted a search of Sen. Ted Stevens' Alaska home as a result of a corruption investigation. The senator, 83, is the oldest Republican in the U.S. Congress.

Stevens is under investigation for a 2000 renovation project which more than doubled the size of his home in Girdwood, Alaska, near Anchorage. The contractor who oversaw the project, Bill Allen, has already pleaded guilty to bribing Alaska state legislators. Allen, through his VECO Corp., an Alaska-based oil field services and engineering company, has won tens of millions of dollars in federal contracts.

Stevens said in an official statement: "I urge Alaskans not to form conclusions based upon incomplete and sometimes incorrect reports in the media. The legal process should be allowed to proceed so that all the facts can be established and the truth determined."

The investigation is being overseen by the Justice Department’s public integrity division in Washington, which handles major corruption cases involving public officials.
