A bear destroyed the face of a Chinese man. After various searchers, a team discovered that the Chinese could receive a new face. Also a French-Caribbean man’s face was damaged by a rare tumor. This has lead researchers into finding out that face transplants are possible and are not bizarre at all.
The researcher team said that these transplants are not at all dangerous and they could be long-lasting without any major problems. The study was made public in the Lancet medical journal by two medical teams who discovered that this kind of surgery could increase the hope for many disfigured people.
After the two surgeries were made, the men had tissue rejection in the first years, but neither of them had any psychological problems in accepting their new appearances and join the society again.
The first kind of face transplant surgery was made on a French woman Isabelle Dinoire in November 2005 and other three surgeries took place after this. Dinoire was disfigured after she had been bitten by a dog, but she finally recovered after the surgery and two rejection attacks.
The Chinese man who had his face destroyed by a bear is only 30 years old but doctors have figured out a way to offer him a new face. There were some problems during the surgery about the tissue rejection but after two years he managed to recover very well.
Shuzhong Guo and colleagues at Xijing hospital in China wrote that "This case suggests that facial transplantation might be an option for restoring a severely disfigured face, and could enable patients to readily reintegrate themselves back into society."
