Rain poured down on Cuba
over the weekend, causing massive flooding in the eastern regions of the
country and killing two people, the media informed on Monday.
Hundreds of buildings were damaged and more than three
thousand people were evacuated from the affected areas. The search for stranded
persons continue, as two workers were reported dead until now, local
authorities saying the figure could rise.
Heavy rains caused the flooding of large cultivated areas in
the eastern part of the island, most of the crops being compromised., amid the
beginning of the cyclone season.
The water levels continue to rise, hundreds of people being
evacuated as a precaution measure. According to the country’s meteorological
agency, the rain could continue in the next days, but in small quantities.
A large part of Cuba
has been affected by drought in the past years, which caused the heavy rain to
inflict more damage, the flood-defence systems being outdated in most of the
eastern regions.
The situation changed radically this year, frequent showers
filling the ground with water and bringing it to a saturation level. Cuba
has a tropical climate and due to the fact that it’s surrounded by oceans,
hurricanes and other intense weather phenomenons tear along the island nation
every year.
