General Electric to Distribute Dream Works Film

DreamWorks Chairman Stacey Snider announced on Monday that General Electric Co’s Universal Studios have made a plan to release films by Dream Works SKG during a new partnership with Reliance ADA Group of India. The Universal Studios will receive 8% of the distribution fee on a rate of six films per year. The contract was made to last 7 years and begins from 2009.

Snider, a partner in the new movie venture with director Steven Spielberg and Reliance, said in an interview on Monday that "it's an excellent organization run by top-flight executives ... they are long-term colleagues and people with whom we have worked." Dream Works also has 30 pending projects with Paramount Pictures, their former partner. Snider said that Universal can take a number of those projects.

Snider and Steven Spielberg have been searching for a partner since Dream Works ended its $1.2 billion contract with Reliance in September. Steven Spielberg has had a 20 years career with Universal as a director. After that, he decided to form Dream Works with David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg in 1994.

Katzenberg also owned a separate publicly studio which helped Dream Works.  Universal distributed films for Dream Works and also for Dream Works Animation SKG Inc, Katzenberg’s studio. The contract ended in 2006 when Viacom Paramount Pictures signed the public company to a distribution deal.

Dream Works ended its contract with Paramount Pictures last week as to begin their deal with Reliance. Still, Reliance has a contract with Paramount until 2012.
