Healthier and More Expensive Food; Ban on Trans Fats Food
What happens with this Trans Fat? They are made by pumping hydrogen into liquid oil at high temperature. Trans Fat is what fast-food restaurants do to make food crisp and add the flavor. Where can Trans Fats be found? The Food and Drug administration released a list of the Trans Fat providers.

Major products that are made by using the hydrogenation are cakes, cookies, pies, bread in a 40% rate of fats. 21% Trans Fats are used in animal products, 17% in margarine, 8% in fired potatoes and 3% in salad dressing.

Trans Fats are usually linked to health problems, obesity and heart diseases. That is why from 2010 these fats will not be used in restaurants anymore. Still, the packed food will make an exception from the rule.

Bakeries, restaurants, cafeterias who have food facilities will have to make the food without using oil products, margarine and they will also have to short the products that contain trans fats.

The health inspectors will have to verify also the Trans Fats used in places offering the food facilities from now on. The ones who will break the rule will have to face fines from $25 to $1000 for more illegalities. Consumers concerns about the food they eat have already made international chains as KFC, Taco Bell and McDonald’s remove the Trans Fats.

Yet, the food will be more expensive. For example, French fries that now cost $1.75 will bump to $2.75, because the new rule has been costly as there are few distributors of the alternative oils.

New York has started to fight Trans Fats by offering a Trans Fat Help Center where bakers will be schooled. California, for example, has put a ban on junk food and Trans Fats from school meals.
