The bitter divorce that gave tabloid media so much food for
gossip between Beatles’ Paul McCartney and Heather Mills ended with a
settlement with $48.6 million in favor of the former model-turned activist.
According to a document released by the Family Court, Mills
was granted a lump sum of $33 million to which assets worth $15.6 million are
added. Furthermore, the couple’s daughter, four-year old Beatrice will receive
from her father $70,000 every year. McCartney will also be paying the nanny and
school tuition for Beatrice.
McCartney and Mills reunited in court the last month. The
stake was a slice of the Beatles’ star fortune estimated at around $1.6
billion. During the court meetings, Judge Hugh Bennett learnt that McCartney’s
fortune was actually two times smaller than estimated, his assets being worth
about $800 million (a sum which is not to be neglected, however).
The 40-year old Mills
represented herself in court, seeking almost $250 million. Who said that money
cannot love, should have thought further and acknowledged that money buys
breakups). Her former hubby on the other hand, offered only $31.6 million,
including her own assets.
“It was an incredible result in the end to secure mine and
my daughter's future and that of all the charities that I obviously plan on
helping and making a difference with — because you know it has been my life for
20 years,” Mills said at a news conference.
The Beatles co-founder and the former model tied the knot in
June 2002 after his first wife passed away from breast cancer. After a year,
they had Beatrice. After just four years of marriage, the estranged couple
announced their separation. At the time, they claimed that their breakup was
amicable.
However, since McCartney, 65, filed for divorce, the
discussions took a not so amicable turn. Mills accused him of failing to
protect her and their daughter from death threats and the ubiquitous
media.
