The National Hurricane Center in Miami has released a new report about Hurricane Ike, which seems to be the strongest hurricane this season. It grew its strength to Category 4 as it crossed a path from the Caribbean to Florida and Louisiana to Mexico, making everybody wonder where it would stop.
Before heading to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Ike could reach 135 mph winds and send them over Cuba and near the Florida Keys on Monday. More than 1,000 miles are threatened by the strong hurricane, including New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
Charlie Crist, Florida’s Governor, stated that "These storms have a mind of their own. There are no rules, so what we have to do is be prepared, be smart, vigilant and alert."
After Hanna attacked last week, Ike’s eye made its way on Saturday near the British territory of Turks and Caicos at 11 p.m. EDT. Thousands of people were moved to shelters in Haiti after they had just passed over the damages made by Hanna. If Ike leaves more rain than Hanna did, the death toll could rise to millions.
Earlier in the day, Ike strengthen from a Category 3to a Category 4 hurricane with top-sustained winds of 135 mph and it was moving to the southwest at about 15 mph. Colin McAdie, a hurricane center meteorologist, said that Ike “is a very dangerous storm. There's going to be some ups and downs, but we expect it to remain a major hurricane over the next couple days."
