A series of seven bomb explosions in the old city of Jaipur in western India killed 63 and left about 200 wounded. The police think it was an attack by Pakistani or Bangladeshi Islamist militants. Several people have already been detained for questioning.

"We have detained around one dozen people and we are trying our best to unravel the conspiracy behind this dastardly attack," said Gulab Chand Kataria, the Rajasthan state home minister, in a statement.

The first bomb was dropped in a vegetarian restaurant in a crowded bazaar shortly after 7.30 pm. After a few minutes, other bombs exploded at a nearby market and inside a Hindu temple. The place was full of worshippers, as Tuesday is the day of worship set aside for Hanuman. The next blast was at Sanganer Gate, one of the main entrances leading through the walls of old Jaipur. According to the police, many of the bombs were strapped to bicycles, exploding after intervals of few minutes between each other.

A nationwide security alert was announced and a dawn-to-dusk curfew was imposed in the affected city.

Among those killed was a 10-year-old boy.

"Obviously, it’s a terrorist plot. The way it has been done, the attempt was to cause the maximum damage to human life." stated A.S Gill, the local police chief.

Indian authorities spread security forces in the country, especially at airports and railway stations.
