Indonesia Hit by Powerful Earthquake

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia and killed two people, leaving hundreds of homes damaged and a tsunami warning. The quake hit the Coast of Sulawesi Island during the night and damaged many homes, hospitals and hotels from the area. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake hit an 85-mile area from the city of Gorantalo.

The center of the calamity was centered 16 miles beneath the sea and it was followed by two strong aftershocks of 5.5 and 5.1 magnitude. After the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre announced that a tsunami was going to hit the coast within 600 miles. The residents were very scared and left their homes in the middle of the night. Long after the warning was lifted, they decided to go back.

In 2004 another earthquake hit the Sumatra Island and was followed by a strong tsunami that damaged the coastline of the Indian Ocean and killed nearly 230,000 people. Last year, another tsunami killed 5,000 people from the Java Island.

The earthquake in Indonesia killed two people and injured 37 other residents. Nearly 200 homes were destroyed and some of them were even completely crumpled. Not even the hospital was a safer place to go as many patients were evacuated from its building.

Indonesia is one of the most dangerous places when it comes to earthquakes. Because of its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the tectonic plaques move more often than those from other places. The Ring of Fire is an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
