Intel’s Montevina Centrino 2 Chips: (a bit) Late Comers

On Tuesday, Intel Corp. officials announced that the company would delay the launch of its "Montevina" Centrino 2 chips. The reasons for the push-back were said to be "technical and certification problems."

Although the world’s leader on the microprocessor market was supposed to launch the new technology in either May or June, a new deadline was set for July 14. The entire line of chips will be out by the first week of August.

Meanwhile, Intel is taking care of its Atom microprocessors. Some of the chips, previously known as Silverthorne, will be used in pocket-sized gadgets, called by Intel MIDs, for mobile Internet devices. The others, formerly called Diamondville, are to be used in low-end laptops and desktop computers expected to cost around $250.

The Intel Atom processor is created using microarchitecture designed for small devices and low power consumption, Intel said, according to Reuters. The processors are made using Intel’s 45-nanometer technology and will run at clock speeds up to 1.8GHz. The size of the chip is less than 25 square millimeters. They are so small, that 11 of them would fit in a space the size of a penny, the company reported.

The Centrino platform was first introduced back in 2004 and since then, it has had quite a run.
