Based on the successful Marvel comic book series, “Iron Man”
is a story of a superhero, Tony Stark, a driven inventor and executive who
seems to have accomplished all his dreams, but one night, he secretly becomes
Iron Man, a fantastic character who fights all and in the end he fights with
the one enemy he can never beat – the dark side of himself. Iron Man is the
symbolic figure of decades of defense spending and innovation. The strong hero
fights against crime, terrorism and corporate espionage.
Robert Downey Jr., the actor that will be the central figure
of the movie, said that he never heard of the heroic character before this
experience and he decided to “be” Iron Man in the film directed by Jon Favreau
because he was one of his admirers.
“I originally didn't think he was right,” Favreau noted, and
I’m sure he wasn’t the only one, the director said according to the Cinema
Blend. “I met with him though, and he really responded to playing this part.
And Tony Stark was one of the few characters that Downey could actually play – age-wise,
because a lot of the other characters are much younger. So, it did begin to
occur to me that he was perfect. It also became evident that he was in great
shape, great health... and many years had passed since his lower points... it
became more and more possible that he might be Tony Stark,” he added, quoted by
the same source.
The actor dated actress Marisa Tomei, with whom he played in
“Only You” and “Chaplin,” in the 1990’s. He then married actress Deborah
Falconer on May, 29, 1992.
Downey,
43, was nominated for an Oscar fifteen years ago for his extraordinary
portrayal of Charlie Chaplin. It looks like he is, after all, “the hero type,” despite
all the differences between the character interpreted before and the actual
superhero.
