Janet Jackson, 42, has been recording with Island Def Jam for 14 months when she decided to finish her journey on the label’s Island. The singer announced on Monday that she wants to departure from Island Def Jam and her publicist told Reuters that the label agreed to finish the relationship with Janet Jackson whenever she requested.

Janet Jackson had a long recording relationship with Virgin label, but in July 2007 she decided to make a deal with Island Def Jam and released her album “Discipline” in February 2008. What made the artist to give up the contract was the poor sale of her album because the label “stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album” after they released her first single, “Feedback.”

The 42-year-old singer added that she “can't say if we'll be working with them in the future. I don't know what the future holds between the two of us." Her latest album released by the Island label debuted No. 1 on Billboard 200 in March and sold 181,000 copies, but it only reached 415,000 copies in the U.S. until now, spending only 14 weeks on the chart.

According to a statement released by her management team, Janet Jackson "will have autonomy over her career, without the restrictions of a label system." The statement also announced that the singer will now promote her music independently, through “iTunes, mobile carriers and other diverse and innovative channels."

Janet Jackson started her career back in 1974, at the age of seven, when she appeared on stage in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a show at the MGM Casino. Her father, Joseph Jackson, was her manager when she started recording and also when she began her career as an actress on the CBS variety show “The Jacksons” in 1976.
