The infamous drunk incident of 2006 may finally become history for Mel Gibson, who appeared in court Wednesday and was praised by the judge for his progress in battling alcohol problems.
Movie star Mel Gibson was arrested on July 28, 2006 for driving under the influence of alcohol. Gibson was caught along the Pacific Coast Highway, not very far from his beach house in Malibu.
The star was arrested by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy who spotted Gibson driving with 87mph in a 45-mph zone. The actor was found out to have a 0.12 percent blood-alcohol level and as if it weren’t enough, he also brought anti-Semitic remarks to the officer who had detained him.
The 52-year-old actor and director entered a no-contest plea in August, 2006. Judge Lawrence Mira sentenced him to three years probation, compulsory participation at an alcohol rehabilitation program for four and a half months, five days a week and he was also ordered to pay $1,400 in fines.
As a result of his late behavior, the Malibu Superior Court Judge Mira, decided Wednesday to let Gibson serve the rest of his probation without presenting himself in court again.
However, the judged warned the actor, that this is going to be “the most difficult time” for him because he will be on his own. The judge also added: "Good luck to you as you continue your rehabilitation."
Mel Gibson thanked the judge and he also apologized for his comments in public. In addition, he explained that he has faced alcohol problems all his life.
Gibson first gained great success by playing the role of a pos-apocalyptic survivor in 1979’s “Mad Max.” He won an Academy Award as the director of 1995’s “Braveheart.”
In 2004 he directed “Passion of the Christ,” one of the highest-grossing films of the decade.
