Tejano singer Emilio Navaira may not survive after the car
accident he had last week in Bellaire, west of Houston, doctor Alex Valadka
informed at the Memorial Hermann hospital, Reuters reports.
Emilio Navaira and his staff were returning home on Sunday,
in San Antonio, after playing in southeast Houston. The bus also had six
bad members on board. According to Navaira’s agent, the singer was driving the
tour bus which crashed into barriers.
A Bellaire police representative said the Tejano singer was
thrown through the windshield. The police are investigating if Navaira had been
drinking before the event. It seems he was not licensed to drive the vehicle.
Now the singer’s condition is uncertain after the brain
injuries he suffered. According to BBC News, doctor Valadka reported on Monday
that Navaira underwent surgery, with medical staff removing a blood clot that
had put pressure on his brain. The doctor continued that if Navaira survived,
his recovery would be long and hard.
Joe Casias, the singer’s agent, informed that the other bus
passengers were treated for cuts and bruises and left the hospital, excepting
Rick Vega, the bass player, who was still hospitalized, suffering from
abdominal injuries.
Emilio Navaira has been named King of Tejano music. He is
considered to be one of the most influential musicians of this genre. Tejano is
the folk music made by Texans with Hispanic origins. In 2003, Emilio Navaira’s
album “Acuerdate” won a Grammy for best Tejano album.
