Millions of people were left without power on Tuesday, due to an unexplained equipment failure, devastating traffic in intersections and leaving some trapped in elevators.
The massive blackout affected at least two million people, as the incident, which occurred at about 1:09 pm, caused the customer demand for electricity to exceed supply.
The failure that conducted to a fire at a Miami transmission facility affected at least three other power companies, besides Florida Power & Light, the main energy provider in the state. The incident led to an emergency automatic shutdown at the Turkey Point nuclear plant in south Florida.
The power came back rather quickly, as the problem was solved in several hours or even sooner.
The Sunshine State is usually hit by hurricanes, which most of the times cause power outages, so the event was dealt with calm even if the police, ambulances and fire department declared that they were really solicited with emergency calls from people trapped in elevators.
One of the biggest problems in these types of situations is the fact that people in intersections forget the traffic rules when the lights are out, which causes traffic jams and accidents.
The officials of the power supplying companies said that an investigation will be conducted in order to discover the cause of the incident.
Enrique Santacana, president and CEO of the North American operations of Swiss engineering group ABB, an electrical distribution equipment maker, said that the more and more often power outages are the result of the overcharged aging infrastructure, which is having problems at sustaining the rapid development of electricity demand.
