With a little more than a few strings, a paper clip and some sticks, New Line Cinema will be developing the original science-oriented adventure series "MacGyver" into a feature film.
The 1985-92 ABC series that made actor Richard Dean Anderson famous, and paved the way for his roles in "Stargate: Atlantis" and "SG-1," will be making the crossover to the big screen in the near future.
According to
the Hollywood Reporter, Raffaella De Laurentiis, daughter of Dino De Laurentiis, is producing through her Raffaella Prods. along with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff. Dino De Laurentiis is exec producing.
"MacGyver" found Anderson playing the title character, a secret agent for the Phoenix Foundation who had the amazing ability to use common household appliances, chewing gum, shoestrings or wire to escape from various dangerous situations.
Two made for TV films were produced in the years after the show's cancellation.
Although at first the show was mildly celebrated by critics, the concept eventually became more ludicrous and unintentionally funny as the years went on. "Saturday Night Live" took the concept to the next level with its spoofs "MacGruber," starring Will Forte.
There's no writer attached to the project yet, nor any details on whether Richard Dean Anderson is being approached to reprise his role. In the past years, 59-year-old Anderson proved more than willing to revisit the character on SNL's MacGruber sketches.
New Line’s Richard Brener said, "We think we’re a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise."
