Prostate cancer has always been a common cancer for men, but second in skin cancer caused both to women and men. Nearly 186,000 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008, according to the American Cancer Society. This type of cancer takes the fault for almost 9% of the cancer-related deaths in men.
AMC also said that 90% of the men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer are detected when the cancer is confined or has spread to the areas around the pelvis. But the new discovery of PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) helps the oncologists to easily diagnose prostate cancer when it is in an early stage and can be treated and cured.
The prostate cancer develops in the prostate, which is a glande in the male reproductive system. The cancer occurs when cells of prostate mutate and start to multiply out of control. Sometimes the cells can spread from the prostate to other parts of the body like the bones or the lymph nodes.
Various symptoms of this type of cancer could be the pain in the pelvis area, difficulty in urinating, and an erectile dysfunction. Still, according to AMC, prostate cancer is least common in Asia and most common among the black men. The prostate cancer usually develops when a man has passed 50 years old.
Besides the PSA, which has been said to be not so accurate or safe, the most common way of diagnose the prostate cancer is by taking a biopsy of the prostate and examine it under a microscope.
