Memorial For Green Sea Turtle Found Slaughtered On Beach
Malama Na Honu is holding a memorial Monday morning at Laniakea Beach, at the site a green sea turtle was found mutilated and partially buried in the sand.

The turtle, one of a group of 20 such reptiles that on a regular basis comes to laze around in the sun on the beach called "Turtle Beach," was found by beachgoers with its shell and head removed. On top of that, a flipper was missing, said Patrick Doyle, Malama Na Honu project coordinator. The carcass was taken by federal officials to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration facilities, where a necropsy will be performed.

The green sea turtle is included on the federal Endangered Species list, being considered a species in danger of extinction in Florida and the Pacific coast of Mexico and a threatened species in other areas like Hawaii.

Being angry because someone could actually butcher a turtle, several people gathered on the beach in memory of the “Honey Girl.” "I was happy I could make it to the beach today, just to honor our Honey Girl," said Kirsten Plath, a volunteer with a turtle guardian group that informs the public about the honu.

The female sea turtle weighting 200 pounds is said to have had about 30 years old.

Since 1978, sea turtles are being protected under federal and state law. If anyone injures or harasses them, serious fines up to $50,000 are to be faced, and even jail time.
