No official statement has been released yet regarding the possible acquisition of search engine maker Powerset by Microsoft. VentureBeat was the first to come forward with the information four days ago; it was said the deal may be worth as much as $100 million. Powerset is a highly practical and implicitly, very useful search engine that can find online information much more efficiently than other engines can. What it does is it answers a series of who, when or what questions; obviously enough, it doesn’t function 100% accurately and there still is a lot of room for improvement. If Microsoft should indeed decide to purchase Powerset, both companies are in for a very good final result. Microsoft is getting ready to officially wrap up some major administrative changes, as Bill Gates is retiring on July 1. Gates will leave his current position of chief research and strategy officer, along with all the implied responsibilities, to colleague Craig Mundie. Steve Ballmer, one of Gates’ Harvard classmates, is to become the company’s new chief executive officer. It seems Microsoft is keeping itself quite busy these days. On Thursday last week, Microsoft officials announced the company's plan to acquire a Portugal-based, mobile service-oriented company called MobiComp, for an undisclosed sum. MobiComp’s offer brings several consumer and carrier services, such as MobileKeeper (used for mobile back-up, news reception and also social networking) and Active mTicker (a mobile news feed service).
