Kazakhstan-born director Timur Bekmambetov brings together
Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy in a very “Wanted” movie, although its merits
are not truly justifiable.
In its opening weekend, “Wanted” earned an estimated $51.1
million in 3,175 theaters in the United States
and Canada,
ranking number two at the box office and averaged approximately $16,100 per
theater.
Based upon Mark Millar’s graphic novel series, the film
portrays the transformation of the prime character from an average and rather clumsy young man to
a skilled and well-trained assassin.
Wesley Gibson, 25, played by James McAvoy, is an overanxious
accounts manager who lives in a tiny apartment and buries himself every day in
papers and bills, filling out reports. His boss is arrogant and does everything
to terrorize him, while his girlfriend is cheating him with his best friend.
Unhappy and unable to cope with his dull and miserable life, Wesley takes
anti-anxiety pills. However, he feels no need of changing his monotonous life.
Nevertheless, his life transforms completely one day, when
he meets a very beautiful woman at the drugstore, while he is buying more
medication. Fox (Angelina Jolie), was given the duty to look after Wesley,
protecting him from the man that had killed his father. She tells Wesley the
story of his dad’s death and how he died the previous day on the rooftop of the
Metropolitan Building and warned him of the fact that
he would be the next in line in case he does not do as she tells him to.
Although he had never met his father, Wesley is recruited by the “Fraternity”,
a secret society of assassins that his father belonged to before he died.
Wesley must now learn how to show his physical abilities and Fox trains him to
reveal the special powers he was born with, so that he can avenge the
death of his father.
The group's leader, Sloan, convinces Wesley to follow in his
father’s footsteps and become one of them. He soon learns the ways of the group and
becomes a true assassin.
He now faces a brand new exciting life and has to manage
confronting the most dangerous and wicked people alive. He happens to become
the right hand of Professor Seltzer, a scientist who is a member of the leading
assembly of the “Fraternity”.
Overall, the plot is not very original or exhilarating. It
follows the ordinary man that becomes superhero over night pattern. However,
some people enjoy experiencing a virtual transformation and the two hours the
movie lasts will show them to a world that turns from bad to better. And it’s
all in the hands of one man.
Although the movie is not outstanding at all, it does have a
major advantage: the A-list cast. Angelina Jolie plays her usual part of tough
and incomparable woman that fits her perfectly and it is also very interesting to
see McAvoy in the skin of a reckless assassin.
Despite its cons, if you want to have a laugh and also
admire a couple of fascinating actors, you should visit the cinema for almost
two hours. And if you won’t enjoy it, your kids surely will. There’s another hero
in town.
