MySpace Mobile Releases App for Android
The social networking giant MySpace announced the launch of an application for mobiles optimized for Google’s Android mobile operating system and available via the Android Market virtual storefront for free. MySpace Mobile promises deep integration with the Android-based devices like T-Mobile’s G1, with features including friend searches and photo uploading. Furthermore, a user can update his status or mood. The application will also integrate with music discovery service Shazam, enabling users to identify songs and connect to the artist’s MySpace page. Shazam allows anyone with a mobile phone to identify music by holding the phone towards an unknown song. The Shazam technology recognizes the song and provides the user with information about the track, artists and album.

MySpace is a popular social networking website offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music and videos for teenagers and adults internationally. Its headquarters are in Beverly Hills, California, where it shares an office building with its immediate owner, Fox Interactive Media. In June 2006, MySpace was the most popular social networking site in the United States. According to comScore, MySpace has been overtaken by main competitor Facebook in April 2008, based on monthly unique visitors.

MySpace representatives told the media that their mobile website now welcomes two million users each day. A research study conducted by ABI says that 70 percent of mobile social networking users are doing this from MySpace. The mobile application can also be used for the iPhone and Sidekick, with an app optimized for RIM (Research in Motion)’s BlackBerry platform currently in development. The feature appeared for the first time on Monday, but it won’t be officially available until Wednesday, because that’s when G1’s launch is programmed.
