It seems that these are Nokia’s
days! After the company’s recent several announcements, everyone is talking
only about the Finnish mobile phone-maker’s new products and services, such as
the United States-compatible version for N95 or the brand new OVI web platform
and also about the company’s revived N-Gage game system.
However, out of all these new
things Nokia has announced it seems that the N-Gage game system’s resurrection
is the most controversial move from the annalists’ points of view. N-Gage’s
history is simple and somehow tragic till the current point, when Nokia has
plans to revive it.
N-Gage is a device that has
combined the functions of a mobile phone with those of a handheld game system.
It has started to sell back on the 7th of October 2003 and it has
been based on the Nokia Series 60 platform. But, eventually the Finnish
company’s idea hasn’t proved to be too brilliant. Nokia has in fact tried to
create a rival to Nintendo’s video game console Game Boy Advance, and to
improve the gaming machine with cell phone functionality. But the project has
proved to be unsuccessful; this has happened partly because of the device’s
buttons, which were created for a phone and did not fit the gaming demands. So,
when the users were trying to play a game the buttons were not answering their
demands, and when they were using the device as a phone, its shape appeared to
be quite inappropriate for a normal mobile device.
But, it appears that Nokia is a
fighter and it has learned from the previous mistakes. Despite everybody’s
current surprise, the company has announced since 2005 the new device and now
it has just reminded us that it will be available in a very short-time period.
Maybe the Finns have finally correctly adjusted their device. However, the fact
that big name publishers will bring their games to the device is likely to
transform N-Gage into a hit device.
