A representative for Def Jam records has
confirmed that Nas has decided to change the title of his new album “N*gger” to
the self-titled “Nas,” according to Entertainment Weekly.
Contrary to reports, the rapper told
AllHipHop.com that the album will be untitled.
The Queens
hip-hop artist, born Nasir Jones, sparked controversy last year when he
announced the provocative title for his upcoming ninth album. Despite the
controversy surrounding the title, Nas' label and chairman of Island Def Jam
Music Group stood behind God Son's concept. Nas told MTV News
last week that he was still facing pressure to change the album’s name. Reverend
Jesse Jackson said “the ‘N’ word is morally offensive and socially
distasteful.” The rapper said that everybody is trying to stop the title, but
claimed he isn’t concerned whether it sells or not.
Nas clarified in a statement why he
considers his new album untitled. “The people will always know what the real
title of this album is and what to call it,” Nas said in a statement. “It's
important to me that this album gets to the fans...It's been a long time
coming. I want my fans to know that creatively and lyrically, they can expect
the same content and the same messages. It's that important.”
The album will feature Dead Prez, Rick
Ross, and the LOX – as well as production by Salaam Remi, Jermaine Dupri, DJ
Toomp, and No I.D, according to the reports. The LP will also feature a guest
appearance by Jay Electronica. “Jay Electronica is the future. He’s what
rappers are trying to be or what they are aspiring to be,” the rapper said. A
track entitled “Be A Nigger Too” was already leaked to the internet, but the album
is scheduled to reach stores on July 1.
