New Salmonella Outbreak Sickens Thousands

Nearly 32 people from 12 different states got sickened with salmonella after they had eaten precooked, frozen chickens, the federal government announced this week. The food poisoning started because many people still don’t know how to cook the frozen chicken, as they put it in the microwaves, when it was actually told to be put in the oven and cooked.

The Department of Agriculture stated that the dishes which sickened so many people included breaded or pre-browned chicken breasts. Some of the meals included the chickens stuffed with vegetables or cooked for “chicken Gordon bleu.” Those who cooked the chicken inside the microwave didn’t seem to notice that the meal wasn’t cooked enough inside.

Some of the 32 people were found to be from Minnesota, but the agency didn’t want to tell the name of the other 11 states involved in the outbreak. Last year, Minnesota was involved in another outbreak of salmonella which gathered 31 states. 165 people from Minnesota got food poisoned by eating Banquet pot pies.

Carlota Medus, an epidemiologist with the Minnesota Department of Health, told the New York Times last year that “the issue is that people think it’s cooked and it just needs to be heated up. Microwave cooking for something that has to be cooked isn’t always a good idea.” Well, it seems that not everybody heard his message!

This year, the agency stated that “although many of these stuffed chicken entrees were labeled with instructions identifying the product was uncooked and did not include microwave instruction for preparation, individuals who became ill did not follow the cooking instructions and reportedly used a microwave to prepare the product.”
